Having a baby is one of life’s miracles, but with wonderful moments also come challenging times too. Crying can be one of them. Read on for some ideas to deal with a baby who is persistently crying.
Babies communicate that something is upsetting them by crying. There can be many reasons for this, ranging from hunger and stomach gas to a wet diaper or feeling too hot in their sleeper and blankets. Once basic needs like feeding, burping and diaper changes are met and a baby is still crying, try some of these ideas.
Pick up Baby
One of the first things parents can try is picking up the baby and holding him. Don’t worry about spoiling a newborn baby; cuddle and hold the child as much as a parent wants. At this age and up to six months, a baby does not intentionally cry to get someone to pick him up. Babies cry less in countries where parents hold and carry their babies more often.
Newborn Baby Needs Attention
Babies thrive and grow from attention and physical contact from their parents. Especially for newborns, it’s important for a parent to check on baby when he cries. Babies can’t get themselves a glass of milk, change their diapers, get dressed into something more comfortable or tell the loud dog to stop barking – they are completely dependent on their caretakers.
Parents should be ready for a baby that could be crying every few hours for twenty-four hours for the newborn stage. Being as mentally prepared for this as possible can sometimes help parents be more accepting and calmer about a baby crying and that in turn can help with the whole process of soothing baby.
Have Skin-to-Skin Contact Calms Infants
Laying a baby directly on a parent’s chest can help calm the newborn down. Take off the baby’s sleeper or open it up so there can be skin-to-skin contact. Babies can find comfort in the warmth of the skin, listening to the sound of calm breathing by the parent as well as mom or dad’s steady heartbeat. This can be a great way for parents to bond with their baby too.
Have Positive Eye Contact With Baby
Look into the eyes of this little loved one. Having eye contact can be a good way to distract the baby and stop the crying. Gaze into the eyes of the baby and stay as calm as possible. Constant crying is frustrating, but if a parent feels calm, it’s easier for the baby to relax too. A parent needs to gauge her visual distance from the baby so newborn eyes can focus in on mom or dad – about one to two feet is a good range for a young infant.
Make Funny Faces to Relax Infants
The saying goes you have the choice to laugh or cry, so try laughing with baby by making funny faces. Go overboard with clowning antics and have fun with being silly with baby. It can help parents relax and baby will hopefully follow.
Babies can cry for many reasons and parents can try the following tips to help calm him down, such as giving baby attention whenever he cries, picking baby up, having skin-to-skin contact, having happy eye contact and making funny faces for baby.
